Welcome to The Shift Space

Changing the way we understand, connect with, and support young people.

For parents, carers, and professionals who care for, work with, or support children and young people.

Because how we understand young people shapes how they understand themselves.

The Shift Space is a place to pause, reflect and think differently about the children and young people in our lives.

Through thoughtful articles, practical resources and learning opportunities, we explore emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships and development, encouraging adults to look beyond what they see, listen to what is being communicated and develop a deeper understanding of young people and what impacts their lives.

Because how we understand young people shapes how they understand themselves.

Who is The Shift Space For?

This space is for adults around young people.

For anyone who plays a meaningful role in the life of a child or young person.

You may be a parent or carer, a grandparent, a teacher, an education professional, a family practitioner, a youth worker, or someone supporting children and young people in another capacity.

Different roles bring different experiences, responsibilities, and perspectives, but there is something that connects us all: the relationships we build with a young person matter.

We don’t need to have all the answers.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing we can do is remain interested, curious, listen carefully, and be willing to consider a different perspective.

The Shift Space brings together professional knowledge, therapeutic thinking, lived experience, and practical approaches to help adults better understand, connect, and support the young people in our lives.

What makes The Shift Space different?

A different kind of space.

There is no shortage of advice about raising, teaching, and supporting children and young people. The Shift Space is intentionally different.

Rather than offering another set of rules to follow, quick fixes, or promises that one approach will work for every young person, this is a space for curiosity, reflection, and understanding.

Children are individuals.
Families are different.
Relationships are complex.
Context matters.

So instead of always looking for the quickest answer, sometimes we need to create enough space to ask a better question.

To notice before assuming.
To listen before responding.
To understand before trying to change.

Because meaningful change often begins when we create enough space to see and do something differently.

UNDERSTAND MORE

We cannot experience the world through the eyes of another person. But we can remain curious about what they see and how they feel.

We can truly listen to what they tell us.

And we can create relationships in which children and young people know that their thoughts, feelings and experiences matter.

SEEN. HEARD. UNDERSTOOD.

Changing how we understand, connect with and support young people.

Because how we understand young people shapes how they see and understand themselves.

Behind The Shift Space

I am Karen Smith, a Therapeutic Counsellor, Psychological Coach, and Restorative Practitioner with many years of experience working alongside children, young people, parents, families, and professionals.

My career has taken me across education, family support, mental health and wellbeing, research, charitable organisations, public services, and private practice.

Across those different settings, one thing has remained constant: my belief in the importance of understanding the person behind what we see.

I am also a mum, and I know that caring for and supporting a young person isn’t about having all the answers. We, as parents, carers, and professionals, are learning too.

The Shift Space brings my professional and personal experiences and knowledge together through writing, resources, and learning for adults around young people.
